Ethical Sourcing

Rare earths read with a clear conscience.

The East African Rift is opening a new chapter in critical minerals. The pace of that chapter matters, but so does the way it is written. Thales Ventures reads the industry through a standard that treats provenance, people and environment as inseparable from value.

Rare earth elements sit at the centre of the energy transition, defence systems and the next generation of electronics. The same elements, mishandled, can leave behind contaminated watersheds, fractured communities and stranded capital.

Our role is to make the East African rare earth landscape legible for investors. That work is only credible if the deposits and operators we surface meet a serious standard of responsibility. Ethical sourcing is not a marketing layer here. It is the filter through which the entire picture is built.

Our Standard

Six lenses applied to every site we cover.

Provenance

Every site we read on can be traced back to a named licence, a named operator and a verifiable point of origin. Anonymous tonnage does not enter the picture.

Community Standing

Projects are weighed by how they sit with the people who live alongside them: land agreements, local hiring, royalties, and the long quiet record of conduct on the ground.

Environmental Care

Water, tailings, dust and rehabilitation are treated as core indicators, not afterthoughts. A deposit that cannot be worked responsibly is not a deposit worth backing.

Regulatory Alignment

Operators are read against EAC mineral codes, OECD due-diligence guidance for responsible mineral supply chains, and emerging traceability expectations from European and Asian buyers.

Labour & Safety

Working conditions, formal employment, and the absence of child or forced labour are baseline filters. Where artisanal mining is present, the question is whether it is being formalised or ignored.

Transparent Capital

Ownership chains, beneficial owners and the source of operating capital are mapped. Investors deserve to know who they are standing beside before any conversation about exposure begins.

Rare earth concentrate

From Ground To Magnet

Traceability is the new grade.

European and Asian buyers no longer ask only about tonnage and oxide percentages. They ask where the material came from, who handled it, and what was left behind. Projects that can answer those questions clearly will command the premium. Those that cannot will struggle to reach offtake at all.

Our regional reads track this directly: chain-of-custody systems, on-site verification, third-party audits and the documentary trail that allows a kilogram of concentrate to be followed from a Rift Valley pit to a magnet plant in Asia or Europe.

A Quiet Commitment

Capital deployed well leaves the region stronger than it found it.

The investors we work with are not looking for a short window. They are looking for a position in a region they can stand behind for the next two decades. Ethical sourcing is the only foundation on which that kind of position holds.
